3 Things to Know Before Booking Your Wedding Makeup Artist

Wedding Makeup

1. Is he or she knowledgeable about HD makeup…meaning, does he or she know techniques best suited for high-definition photography?

Let’s face it — A wedding is an amazing, joyous celebration of the love between you and your partner. But after the vows are complete and the wedding cake consumed, you are only left with your photos and memories of the day.  That means that you want to look your very best in the photos so that you can look at them fondly and not regret the hair or makeup artist decisions you made!

A wedding makeup artist will know how the flash of the camera will interact with his or her makeup product choices. They will know to ask what type of wedding venue and location you have selected in order to choose the right makeup and ensure it looks the best in that type of lighting. A seasoned wedding makeup artist may even want to check out your photographers style (is it dark and moody, light and bright, etc.) to help make decisions.

2. What kind of reputation does he or she have doing wedding makeup?

It’s great to see a makeup artist’s portfolio and love their work. But what do the artist’s clients say about their experience receiving services from him or her?  Was the makeup artist punctual arriving on location? Did he or she exceed the client’s expectations? Did the client’s makeup last the whole event? Was the look the client received on their wedding day consistent to the makeup trial conducted prior to the event day?

3. Do you know how many in your bridal party will need makeup services and if the makeup artist can accommodate all or take any last minute makeup requests?

Oftentimes, one or two ladies from a bridal party will initially decline to have professional makeup done — until that day when they see the great quality work the other members receive. It’s helpful to know if your makeup artist would be able to accommodate last minute requests. But ultimately, if you are looking for those Pinterest-perfect wedding photos of you and your bridal party, it is great to have everyone get their makeup professionally done. It isn’t until you receive your photos that you realize how obvious it looks when one or two members aren’t as polished or camera ready as the others. Of course, individual budgets should be considered, so if a bridal party member can’t cover the cost and it’s important to you, it might be something to consider covering yourself.
