Many natural-sounding hair dyes claim to be free of ammonia, resorcinol, heavy metals, parabens, SLS and low in ethanolamine, hydrogen peroxide and PPD. So what do these chemicals normally do, and what – if anything – is wrong with them?
Many women have begun to choose natural hair dye over chemical dyes that damage the hair and scalp. One of the main advantages of using natural hair dyes is that they don’t cause any side effects or harm to the hair. Many, including henna, actually strengthen the hair. Natural products are plant-based and don’t destroy the hair cuticle. Chemical dyes, on the other hand, are not only hazardous to the health of the hair, they can also be deadly.
Although there are a few especially potent exceptions (such as henna and walnut hulls, both of which I’ll discuss later), most herbal dyes act progressively, that is, they should be used repetitively over a period of time until the desired shade is achieved. Furthermore, I don’t know of any herb that’ll actually serve as a bleach, but there are plant-based colorants that will highlight, darken, lighten or cover the gray in your hair.
